Chess wins

Ok never really got into these video games except for red alert awhile ago. All i did was build tesla coils then blitz. Not much strategy imho.

I enjoyed playing chess. I was never really good at it. But my dad taught me, and trying time and time again to beat him are fond memories. establishing your base (castle), thinking multiple moves ahead, seeing the big picture, taking time for your plan to develop, taking chances, sacrificing pieces, deception etc... it was a game like no other when i was a kid.

I got tired of it because i came to think that you were forced to memorize certain openings to stand a chance online (not sure if true, but it seemed to me that was what was happening). So i stopped playing as memorizing a bunch of different openings didn't appeal to me.

How do today's games stack up to the ancient game.

Chess is not an RTS. You need to compare chess to turn based games. Probably a tactical game than say something like Civ.

Never got into those types of games. Not even played once...lol

Civ 4 and 5 got me through 3 deployments. Only other modern single player game that compares is Skyrim methinks. Based on replay ability at least.

Sc2 is extremely intense mechanically, but has 3 races and X number of builds that are really viable. There is a lot of strategy, but a lot of it is being able to recogize what your opponent is doing and replying with X proper response. Strategy probably similar to chess, with the addition of having to play at the speed of light.

Dota is just... impossible strategy wise. 100+ characters with all different abilities that are played in any combination of 5v5. Could play 10000 games and still learn something new.

The closest comparison to chess in a video game that I can recall is final fantasy tactics.

Playing speed chess gets close to the anxiety level of SC2 for me.

Online FPS only gets strategic at the professional level, otherwise it's usually a giant cluster of spray and pray.

The Civ games are wonderful examples of the long game more akin to double elimination chess tournaments or annual chess brackets.

As to which is "more" strategy I simply cannot decide

Chess has overall strategy, but really, it's very heavily tactics based and strategy disappears quite quickly. There is almost always an optimal short term move, which is why computers beat humans consistently.

No Computer AI can beat a semi-competent RTS player without cheating, and even then, the AI would REALLY have to cheat.

^^^Every game mentioned requires twitch/reaction time at least as much as actual strategy.

chess because rts always have a practice/speed element.
Sure, there is lots of strategy, but chess is exclusively about that.

I didn't vote. Why should I have to pick only one? I like all those types of games (except for Clash of Clans. Fuck those shitty cell phone games).

I may be wrong, but my impression is that the best Chess programs rely on huge databases of grandmaster games to beat humans. If you give a computer and arbitrary arrangement of pieces, a real grandmaster is much more likely to find the best move than a computer.

This is not true at all. The AI can mirco units to maximize their effectiveness in a level that would be impossible for humans. Not to mention multi-tasking, imagine, trying to defend a 3 prong attack. Developers don't do this since it wouldn't be fun to just keep losing.

Here's an example of custom developed AIs for Starcraft. They still aren't good enough to take the top players though.

Chess players should try Khet. I bought it on steam and like it. I wouldn't call the AI that good though. At least not compared to chess AI's.
