Actually, UMBC (Baltimore, MD) scholarships are quite serious:

The University of Maryland at Baltimore
Three types of four-year Chess Scholarships to UMBC:
- Chess-Player Scholar (up to full-tuition, room, and board);
- Special Merit for Chess (up to $10,000 per year);
- Tournament-Based Awards (up to full tuition)
