Hey, does anyone know how the heck chess rankings are determined EXACTLY (formulas etc)? Ive been trying to find a small algorythm program that will calculate and such, or if i knew how, i'd try writing one myself, but i just dont know how....

I haven't been ranked in 20+ years but it used to be based on the difference between your ranking and the opponent's ranking and it did not scale linearly, depending on how great that difference was, for how many points you gained or lost after a tournament match. I know that my last ranking was 1630something in 1978. However I must have played no more than a dozen games since that time and definitely quit studying my overtures and middle game (I was 21).

Last time i was ranked i was at 1372... but that was back in college and our advisor did it for us... so i never got a chance to figure out how the heck he did it!
