I have a rapid vibration in my 2001 jeep cherokee when I get to around 55mph and it gets louder as I gain speed. It becomes a low roar. But vehicle continues to handle fine. It's not tires, It's not the death wobble. I've had my drive shaft balanced, new u-joints, left back axle replaced. Seems like it may be coming from lower front. When I put in 4x4, it almost disappears. Do front axles turn when not in 4wd? Any clues out there?

It's been more than a dozen years since I was a Jeep tech, so the following is all "if I remember correctly.)

Yes... In 2WD mode, the front axles turn, as do the front differential and driveline. The 4wd engages in the transfer case.

I know you said it's not the tires, but more often than not, freeway speed vibrations are tire related. What have you done to eliminate that possibility?

New tires balanced when put on. Old ones did the same thing. I've had drive shaft balanced and left rear left axle replaced. With all that turning in front, could be anything related to drive train. I can feel the vibration at about any speed over 35. But gets loud at 60.

Is it vibration like a wheel/tire (oscillates more slowly, sounds/feels kinda rythmic) or is it the kind of thing that quickly becomes a constant low frequency hum?

I would throw out a guess at a bad pinion bearing in the front diff. If only because that is the kind of thing that people will constantly miss...but it's not hard to find once someone actually starts trying to pinpoint the noise rather than just throwing parts at the car.

Out of round or bent rim would be my experience. I literally got new wheels yesterday and my high speed vibration is completely gone. When the old rim was spun you could see it didnt spin perfectly round and no amt of balancing ever fixed it including road force.

The other common diagnosis ive come across are bushings.

If you could borrow a wheel or set of wheels from a buddy that would be the cheapest way to find out.
