WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) said Thursday that he overestimated the pace of Iraq (news - web sites)'s recovery from the U.S.-led invasion because he didn't realize the lasting devastation wrought by Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) on his people after the first Gulf War (news - web sites).

Asked to name his mistakes in planning the war in Iraq, Cheney said he had not anticipated how long it would take the Iraqis to begin running their own country. Not until after Saddam was ousted did the United States realize the extent of the Iraqi leader's brutality in putting down revolt in 1991, Cheney said.

"I think the hundreds of thousands of people who were slaughtered at the time, including anybody who had the gumption to stand up and challenge him, made the situation tougher than I would have thought," he said on "The Don Imus Show" on the radio.

"I would chalk that one up as a miscalculation, where I thought things would have recovered more quickly," Cheney said.

Cheney, interviewed hours before he was to take the oath of office for his second term, also said that Iran now tops the list of "the world's potential trouble spots."

Iran is pursuing "a fairly robust nuclear program" and has a history of sponsoring terrorism, he said. "That combination is of great concern."

Cheney said the Bush administration might seek U.N. sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program if necessary. The administration prefers to address the problem with diplomacy and doesn't want more war in the Middle East, he said.
Wow...will the sloughing off of responsibility never end?

I am still waiting for any proof of the number of people "slaughtered" under Saddam. There were claims of mass graves. No one has found them.

They must be with the WMD.

But none of those who complain when I post the results of a study that the U.S. has killed 100,000 Iraqi civilians in only 22 months has anything to say when Cheney makes this ridiculous unsubstantiated claim.

This incredible claim that it's Saddam's fault that their ill-planned and unprovoked invasion has gone badly tells you all you need to know about Cheney/Bush.

They are hearing messages from beyond the stars and we are expected to believe them.

Haha. Now not only were there never any WMD, but Saddam never hurt a fly.

Saddam Hussein: A nicer, gentler kind of Stalinist!

The US has been bombing the crap out of Iraq for over ten years with sanctions on top and now it is Saddam that destroyed the Iraqi infrastructure? Yep, more messages from "beyond the stars".

I think the point he was trying to make is that people demand proof of the people we killed, but just accept the numbers that saddam killed. I strangely doubt he thinks saddam was kind or gentle

If that's what they mean by mass graves I know of many right here in the USA.

Cheney is like this frat boy who comes out of nowhere, bends over, spreads his butt cheeks and lets one rip right from the middle of his hole and then walks away with a smug smile on his face knowing that his bitch (Bush) will have to explain the reason for the indiscretion.

YET AGAIN, this Regime pushes the onus of responsibility off to some other, helpless factor.

How pathetic, but expected.
