WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney said on Thursday that Iran was at the top of the administration's list of world trouble spots and expressed concern that Israel "might well decide to act first" to eliminate any nuclear threat from Tehran.
"You look around the world at potential trouble spots, Iran is right at the top of the list," Cheney said in an interview aired on MSNBC.

"Given the fact that Iran has a stated policy that their objective is the destruction of Israel, the Israelis might well decide to act first and let the rest of the world worry about cleaning up the diplomatic mess afterwards," he said.

"We don't want a war in the Middle East if we can avoid it. And certainly in the case of the Iranian situation, I think everybody would be best suited by or best treated and dealt with if we could deal with it diplomatically," Cheney added. (emphasis added)

So what Israel and the US are going to attack Iran? I hope our intelligence is a little better this time.

Maybe someone should tell the VP that we already started a war in the Middle East and maybe he should say ?We don?t want ANOTHER war in the Middle East if we can avoid it.?

I dunno about you but it sounds like he would like the Israelis to act on this. Such an act would just expose more hypocrisy of our administration and further destabilize the region.

It's a vicious cycle:

Afghanistan war going bad? Can't find Bin Ladin? Distract Americans with Iraq!

Iraq war going bad? Can't find WMDs? Distract Americans with Iran!

etc...

Calling it a trouble spot, and all the other press reports about Iran. True, there is not much in this article that says the US is going to attack Iran, but it seems likely considering all that is being reported about it.

If I remember, Iraq was a trouble spot before we attacked it. Also Iraq and Iran were on the "axis of evil", we attacked Iraq because of WMD's, and we are now reporting Iran has Nukes.

"We don't want a war in the Middle East if we can avoid it."

It's only January 20th, but we have a new leader in the worst quote of the year by a member of the current administration - passing the frightfully, blatantly wrong numbers that C.Rice uttered, just this week: " there are approximately 120,000 trained Iraqi forces now".....and you can't mention that without Biden's follow up - " I was just there - and the people doing the training say the number is 4,000"

She either:

A) - knew that her number was wrong, but by lying about it, it makes the return of our troops seem closer, since she said, moments before, that the return of our troops was directly linked to getting the Iraqi's trained - would be typical of this administration and their use of blantantly wrong facts...

or

B) - really believes the number is 120,000

Which is worse?

Finally, if Rice ever writes a book that is critical of the decisions made in the Iraq war, Cheney is just going to say she was out of the loop anyway...

Where is Tenet's book?

Initially, I believe that Israel does the heaving lifting on this one. If you don't think that is what is going to happen, then ask yourself why we just sold the Israeli's a whole bunch of bunker busting munitions. Syria can't respond, we are next door. Egypt won't, Iran can try, but again, we are next door (on two sides).

Oh, Rice's # is correct. They may have trained 120,000 but many have left, some have been killed, some have gone to the other side. But, pretty much all of them received ineffective training to simply get bodies to throw out there. The 4,195 cited by Biden represents those who have the proper training. Even then, there's no telling if all of them will stay put when the bullets start flying.

Why do I get the feeling that the world is going to go to sh## because of a bunch of psycho war mongering chicken-hawks. Didn't we learn anything from WWII? Seems like Israel and the US are making the same mistakes Nazi Germany made with all this nationalism and offensive attacking.

Look at a map - only Iran separates Iraq from Afganistan.
How do you choose to define a contiguous region that shares a troubled past.
The Muslin Nations that span from what we call the 'Middle East' and to the
area know for Kyber Rifles along the acient merchant trails of history don't
define themselves according to our present USA standards.

Keep going either way and observe the interaction of each adjacent culture over time.
The Ottoman Empire, Assyrian Empire, Troy was on the banks of the sea in what we
now call Turkey. The other way we find Pakistan, India, Kashmir - the goal of the trek.
Spices drove the econlmy and the dessert treks through Egypt and Africa, all interlinked
by the Spice Trail. Our continent was 'discovered' seeking a short-cut the the Spice countries.

How is this not interrelated ?

Afghanistan is part of Central Asia. Middle East ends to the east when Iran ends.

Yeh well, any time Bush or Cheney "warn" the Israelis not to do something, it's with a nudge and a wink- apparently more of a suggestion than anything else...

Just what the misplaced troops in Iraq really need- Iranians retaliating across the border and an insurgency at their backs... Maybe we should attack Syria, too, move right on towards armageddon and the rapture...
