Considering only the energy levels

n =1 n = 2 n = 3 n = 4

of the H atom, which of the following statements are true?

a) Only six emission lines are possible

b) Photons with the highest energy are emitted in a transition
from level n = 1 to level n = 4

c) Photons with the highest frequency are emitted in a transition
from level n = 1 to level n = 4

d) The emission line having the longest wavelength corresponds to a transition
from level n = 4 to level n = 1

e) The emission line having the shortest wavelength corresponds to a transition
from level n = 4 to level n = 1

You can have more than 1 , 2 or 3 right answers.....I tried a,d /b,c/a,b,c/a,b,c,d.
An explanation or any help would be most appreciated. Thx.

Okay. First of all, you can only emit photons in transition from a higher state to a lower. Which means that b and c are out. An emission from 4 to 1 is going to have the most energy, which means the shortest wavelength. If you go through and count the number of possible jumps from a higher to lower energy, it's six. So it's a and e. Yeesh.
