Former U.S. Army soldier Chelsea Manning was hospitalized Tuesday, the result of what a source told CNN is believed to be a suicide attempt.

Manning was taken to a local hospital near the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where she is being held for violating the Espionage Act.
U.S. Army spokesman Colonel Patrick Seiber confirmed to CNN that Manning was taken to the hospital "during the early hours of July 5th" before returning to the barracks. The spokesman said that officials "continue to monitor the inmate's condition."
A U.S. official told CNN's Barbara Starr that Manning was hospitalized after what is believed to be a suicide attempt.
Chase Strangio, Manning's attorney from the American Civil Liberties Union, told CNN that he has been unable to confirm the report.
"I am still trying to figure out what is happening," Strangio said. "I have unfortunately not been contacted by Leavenworth and have no additional information."

Just some collateral damage from the Bush Administration's criminally negligent (to say the least) invasion of Iraq....

whistle blower laws should of protected him.

Whistle blower laws generally protect people for reporting wrong doing on behalf of their employer, in this case, the Federal government. They do not, however, protect anyone who has committed a crime. That is what Manning did and she got what she deserved.

Agree with the above, although sometimes the law leads to unjust results. This is one of those times and Manning should be celebrated along with Edward Snowden as citizens who have performed as great a service to their country as any civilian since perhaps since WW2.

You have to stay inside the system for the system to protect you. If you jump in front of the truck to try and stop it, the seatbelts and airbags aren't doing shit.

Jumping in front of the truck might have been the right and heroic thing to do... but you really shouldn't be surprised when it runs your ass over.

That said, with the way she's been treated I think the sentence should be commuted to time served.

I'm feeling very lawful neutral today

Guys, Manning dumped everything he could get his hands on because he (now she) was unhappy about not fitting in and wanted to be someone important. Let's not make him/her some sort of hero.

Adrian Lamo is probably more to blame than Bush. But even if Lamo hadnt stabbed him/her in the back, she/he/it would still obviously be dealing with some serious mental issues.

He also recklessly disclosed loads of documents, many if not most he undoubtedly did not read beforehand and hence could have had no idea whether anyone would be endangered by his disclosure. That, and you're right. He was an attention whore.

Personally while I agree that Manning dumped documents in an indiscriminate manner compared Edward Snowden, her sentence was too severe...

Especially in light of what the AH-64 gun footage that was released.

Granted just the gunship footage might have been enough to leak in the first place and leaking more probably warranted some years in prison. 35 years and the borderline cruel and unusual punishment was inho too much.
