This past weekend, I went to Philly for a poker game. Afterwards we took a trip over to Pat's because I'd never had a true Philly Cheese steak and I've gotta say... that was the best damn cheese steak I've evern had. No wonder they became famous :)

Talk about a hole in the wall though, I was severely underwhelmed by it's appearance. ;)

I ruined a new shirt though due to drippy grease, but I didnt mind. it was worth it.

whiz without!

Is that the place with an...orange roof? It has windows on both sides and it's on a tip of a triangle between 2 streets? We dropped by a famous joint when we were in Philly and that's what I remember of it...great Cheesesteaks though.

You gotta get both Pat's and Gino's, then take a bite of one then the other till your done. That way you get the true Philly Cheesesteak experience.

Several people claimed that Gino's gave them the runs, so I was a bit worried to try them :)

Gino's is a disgrace. I will never eat there again ever. One year I saw in Philadelphia magazine that they had won the "Best of Philly" award for best italian hoagie. I decided that I would partake and went down there and for the first time did not go accross the street to Pat's. It was clear to me that Gino's had paid someone off for their award (seems to happen a lot...) and were cashing in on the inevitable surge in business. The hoagie was $8, 6" long, on a cheap store bought roll, and not filled with much meat at all.

If you want to have a variety of Cheesesteaks for the "full experience" try:

Pat's
Jim's
Billybob's
(and some others that I would know of if I still lived in Philly...)

Yeah when we were down there, I got the vibe that Gino's was super commercialized. It was all neon signs, pictures of celebs, and glam. I liked the hole-in-the-wall feeling of Pat's... their rolls are 12" PACKED with meat.

Jim's is actually my personal favorite just cause I prefer South Street. Some place in Cherry Hill won best cheesesteak in Philly Magazine's 2003 issue... They were ok, but the local place Gaetano's had them far outclassed, and they weren't even in the league of Pat's or Gino's.

What is with you people who search all over for a good cheesesteak, and then put Cheez Whiz on it? Why ruin a tasty sandwich with that crap? Just get provolone so you don't ruin it.

Anyway, I like Rick's over Pat's and Gino's. BTW, is there some law that requires all cheesesteak sellers in Philly to use a first name for their business name? ;)

Chubby's in Roxborough also makes a fine cheesesteak. And a real Philly Cheesesteak is all about the roll, an engineering marvel if I ever saw one.

Its because the original cheesesteak had cheez whiz.

Hopefully it only took them a day or two to discover how to improve it!

ugh... i remember going to philly and getting a cheesesteak. The cheese whiz ruined it for me. I rather have a Great Steak cheesesteak at my local mall in California, tastes a whole lot better

Have you tried Big Mike's Cheesesteaks in El Segundo or Hermosa Beach?

I've never had a Philly original, but the ones at this place are GOOD!

There are two sides to the Pat's vs. Gino's debate:

Pat's and dumbasses...
