Yeah, so, the FDA has sent a letter to General Mills because they claim that Cheerios are a drug. Not sure I really understand this. On one hand, by their definition, Cheerios are in fact a drug. However, there's plenty of energy drinks and make your pecker larger products out there that fit the bill as well so why aren't they hounding them rather than a respected product which advertises its inherent health benefits? And we wonder why we are so unhealthy.

I'm glad Obama is tackling such pressing issues.

Dude, what the hell is wrong with you?

Well the FDA is under HHS, which is under Obama.

Or are you forgetting that under the last administration, no matter what happened at a federal level, it was the President's fault?

General Mills is making absurd Health claims about Cheerios. If they want to make those claims, they need to be properly scrutinized and verified. FDA is just doing its' job.

There are only three foods that can make claims to fight disease. If you ever notice most foods when they make health claims they say things like "For a healthy heart" "Helps strengthen bones" and so on and so forth. The FDA actually requires significant research before they will actually let you make a claim that a food can stop a "disease". It is why you only rarely see things like Cheerios which claim that it helps lower cholesterol. The food itself doesn't, but the high amount of fiber does.

Fiber happens to be one of the 3 that is approved to claim to fight a disease. I believe Calcium is another and I forget the third but it might be Vit D. Look at the word games labels play. It is actually kind of a joke.

Oh, "Obama Derangement Syndrome", I guess that makes sense. I suppose if you want to equate yourself with the people you mocked during the previous eight years, that's up to you.

Score one for the correct answer. It is interesting that the Obama haters are getting themselves in a froth about this-when it is a simple matter of the FDA properly exercising it't regulatory power (BTW, if the doctors I saw on the news last night are to be believed, a regular size serving (3 oz) of Cheerios would have a negligible effect on chloresterol levels).

Just looked it up the third food component is low sodium for heart disease.

All other food claims fall into the category of structure-function claims.

They can not say "This product may reduce the risk of heart disease?;
but they can say ?This product promotes a healthy heart

Actually, their claim is backed by many doctors. Anything that is high in soluble fiber is beneficial and will help lower your cholesterol. The freakin' Mayo Clinic agrees. Cheerios are high in soluble fiber and the claim is far from "absurd", in fact, it's pretty darn accurate.

While I agree that, technically, the FDA is just doing its job, the fact is that they are being incredibly pedantic here.

SO you don't have a problem with General Mills making a false claim?

What kind of cereal are you smoking exactly?

Their claim goes far beyond saying "benficial". They are claiming X% decrease in Cholestrol over a period of time simply by eating X Amount of Cheerios.

So you're complaining that the buck stopped with Bush previously, and insisting that it stop with Obama now?
I'll just feel a lot better if you come out and admit that you don't base any of this on logical thought.
