How can I tell if there is any personal data left on a phone before I give it away? It's a Nokia 6030. With my SIM card, I don't know whats stored in the phone and what's on the SIM. Without a SIM, or with a spare SIM I have, it won't boot all the way up, and I don't want to pay to unlock it.

Most devices have a factory reset option, for the 6030 it's:

Soft Reset:
Soft Reset will clear pending errors and bring your mobile to an initial state by restoring Factory setting. To operate this function on your mobile, the shortcut is: *#7380#

This function apparently works on almost all nokia mobile phones.

Hard Reset:
It may happen that despite you have restored your mobile to factory setting, the error still exist. In this case, it is recommended that you opt for Hard reset

Enter the code: *#7370# and press Yes to confirm initialization.

hard reset is what you want. I recomend doing this with a blank sim card if you have one available. Sometimes the factory settings automatically copy your contacts from SIM to phone.

The phone is Tmobile locked. I have previously used SIM cards (by me) from years ago (one when I started with Powertel, which went to Voicestream and ended up on Tmobile), so I could have my info still on it. But I can't get to the 'desktop' (to enter code) with these anyway since they aren't active. And a Cingular SIM (not mine) but won't boot in my phone since it's locked. I have an unused SIM that came with another phone, but if I use it, will it then be activated in some way and not ever be able to be used by someone else?

do you have a new phone that you are transitioning to? if so, put the sim in the new phone, and then use the new phone to clear the sim out. you can then use it to boot and reset the old phone.
