Checking LAN Network Speed

I have a second computer that accesses the internet from the wireless router,( connected to my first computer and internet) via a 2nd wireless router, configured as an access point. I have RJ 45 cable running from this access point to the second computer for it's internet access.

I'm trying to determine, if I could benefit buying a wireless router, with a detachable antenna, so, I can improved the connectivity, by installing a longer range antenna to it.

Before I order one, I'd like to be able to run maybe some kind of application software, on this second computer, that would test the current internet connectivity through the LAN connection.
Those wireless applications won't show it. Windows XP won't show any " one to five" bar settings, like a wireless adapter would.

So, my question is: is there any application software, preferably a trial or freeware type, that I can run on this second computer, that can give me an idea of how strong my internet signal is, through the LAN settings.
I've already tried "Netstumbler" that won't work, only works on wireless.
