Sorry for the late report!
I'll leave the console stuff to all the E3 reports all over the net....suffice to say the xbox360 and ps3 stuff is quite impressive...really haven't seen anything from Nintendo...
I have to say I'm very disappointed in the PC game categories...but first the good news...
For all you WoW addicts, including myself, I was told by a level designer that they have an expansion for WoW in the works, but that it is a ways off...and that they have an entire series of patches lined up..not just the next patch which has the Battlegrounds.....and there will be more battlegrounds areas in the future..nothing major, but cool to talk to them.
FEAR was a major letdown. I didn't see ANY of the single player aspects of the game...and frankly, the multiplayer reminded me of SoF2, with better smoke and lighting effects. It looks nice, but it's not any type of leap forward at all...
STALKER - no where to be found. Anyone see this anywhere?
PREY - very nice, and no line at all to get in at the ATI theater, where this was being shown.. the portal technology is way cool, and the spirit walking thing is very cool too...basically, your body sort of levitates when you go into spirit mode, and you can shoot these arrows in that mode....you use it to go into rooms to unlock doors, walk on ceilings, etc...nice looking title, glad they brought it back.
Quake 4 - best showing at E3 this year. The line sucked totally, took over 2 hours to get in, but what they show inside is much, much better than any of the trailers they are releasing. They even show you getting 'modified', which is quite gory, but since they are advertising the "to defeat them you must become one of them" storyline, it shouldn't be a spoiler for anyone. Getting into the mech-warrior type robots looked pretty good too, interesting that your perspective doesn't change to 3rd person, which is nice.
Right outside of Quake 4, was, for me, the biggest surprise of the show, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Of the 3 Doom3 engine games on display (Prey, Q4, and this), I thought this had the most impressive visuals, though to be fair, this was also the only of the three not to be actively played for the demo. Anyway, the models in this look amazing, and whatever they've done to the D3 engine, the outside areas look great. Shame that this isn't the multiplayer portion of Q4!
CoD2 was a letdown in that all that was on display, at least that I could see, was the Xbox 360 version, and something about it just didn't look right.
Half Life 2 - The Lost Coast - wow did they do an AWFUL job of showing this off in the Games for Windows booth....the Vsych settings were all out of wack, and frankly it looked terrible...the HDR effect is neat I guess, but doesn't really get me excited at all.
BattleField 2 looked nice, but again the emphasis seemed to be on the Xbox version.
I'm going to check out the UT2007 demo tomorrow, I tried yesterday but there were some power problems in that wing of the building.....
I did see Steven Speilberg yesterday, and the Wayans brothers (minus Damon), and Michael Chiklis...
Why does LucasArts feel the need to practically hide their booth every year?
Why wasn't Duke Nukem Forever on display? If PC Gamer gets to see it, why can't we all see it?
No sign of Max Payne 3 either......I'll update more tomorrow.
