Checking for open ports on College network

hey i just moved into college i'm just wondering which program i should use to check which ports are open and which are closed. The reason i ask this is the whole network got a big surge of virus's from everyone connecting in and they closed most of all the ports, and now i can't use IRC, bittorrnet, any online games and a few other programs. I really don't wish to make the Admin mad at me for port scanning but need to know what ports are open. Can anyone help me out? Program recommendations? thanks!

Running ShieldsUp! against your system can sometimes provide some useful info about what is blocked at the border. You might need to disable the firewall on your system to see a difference.

oookay that link went to paypal nice scam pal

Hmm, doesn't for me and the OP hasn't edited his/her post either.

He just goofed on the URL, I don't see a scam anywhere. Attacking peeps here isn't a way to get a whole lot of help.

Shields Up works fine for what you need it to do.

Surprisingly, this is going to be the best and easiest way to go about it.

If you're nice, they may say "use ports x, x, x and x for these programs" or they might say "You can't do it". Port scanning the network is the WORST way to go about it, and will likely result in you losing any network priviliges you currenly have.

A network connection at a university/college is a privilige, not a right. It is up to the admins who/what goes on within the network, and they are probably going to be happier with you finding them to talk about it than them finding you after doing something you shouldn't.

Too true. Port scanning once off I'd let you get away with - trying to get around P2P, bit torrent, etc software restriction policy by port redirection, tunnelling, etc is what will get your room connection disabled and your account suspended where I work.

Good luck,

Andy
