checkered board crashing

Hey guys, I bought a 6850 (HIS IceQ Turbo) as recommended by fellow members for my particular setup, and I've already had issues with the card not being recognized in this thread:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2142838

I did eventually get the problem fixed by doing a reinstall of Windows 7 64-bit but I've decided to return the card because of a very annoying coil whine and clicking issue so I am RMA'ing it.

I than decided to pick up an MSI HAWK 6870, which sports the new twin frozen III cooler, and the unit seems to be VERY well built. Unfortunately, it was too big for my Antec Solo and I had to take a pair of metal sheers and cut some clearance for the card, ahah. After I had solved the clearance issues.. I now have a much more difficult problem to troubleshoot.

The computer will boot up with the MSI 6870, it will boot into windows WITHOUT AMD drivers installed, so while its using the generic standard vga drivers, everything works fine at a max res of 1440x900. However, if I load in AMD drivers, the card will crash after I put in my password and its loading the aero features etc. Thus far I have observed two different types of crashes that occur every single time I boot up, but either one will happen at random.

First, the computer will just hang while displaying the checkered board desktop requiring a reset. Second, the computer will do the same behavior as the first, BUT the comp will "recover" itself, with a notification at the bottom right saying "AMD Driver something something crashed but was successfully recovered". I then proceed to stress it by running the windows comp benchmark thing, and than the screen will flash black, and then recover with the same notification over and over as the GPU parts of the benchmark are being run. I've tried turning off aero-peek, and then it will boot past the initial checkered board thus not displaying the "AMD driver crashed, recovered successfully" message, but then when I proceed to do the windows comp benchmark, the comp will then begin going crazy and displaying the notification.

Now, to trouble-shoot this, I have already tried a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit, that DID NOT fix the problem. I then tried reinstalling the drivers (11.2) with ATI install manager AND driver sweeper, that didn't fix it either. I then tried drivers 11.1, that didn't work, I then downloaded drivers from MSI's site for the HAWK 6870, that crashed too. At this point I'm getting pretty frustrated, so I uninstall all graphic drivers again with driver sweeper, pull out the 6870, put back the HIS 6850 that I had ready for shipment back to where I bought it from, booted up the comp, installed driver 11.2 from the same installation file that I used when I installed the 6870.. and viola, it boots up perfectly fine, no crashing what so ever, and windows comp benchmark finishes without a hitch with a score of 7.7 for the GPU.

So.. I'm not really sure what to do. The only thing I can think of is maybe my power supply doesn't have enough power? I have a SeaSonic S12-II 430W, but from the guru3d benchmarks of the HIS IceQ 6850 (http://www.guru3d.com/article/his-radeon-6850-iceq-x-turbo-review/7), and MSI HAWK 6870 (http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-radeon-6870-hawk-review/9), the MSI 6870 actually pulls less power than the HIS.. so that shouldn't be an issue right? I'm going to Frys to pick up another power supply, hopefully another higher-wattage SeaSonic unit, and also another 6870 just to test out if I get problems with those particular combinations. But as I head to Fry's in a few minutes to pick up those two things to troubleshoot, does anyone else have any other suggestions on how to fix this? Or is the MSI card I got actually faulty?

Thank you very much for your time.

No responses.. -_- haha, thats ok!

Just an update guys, I went to Fry's yesterday to pick up an MSI 6870 Twin Frozr II (because I figured thats pretty much as close as I'm gonna get to an MSI 6870 Twin Frozr III), and also an 800W Cooler Master PSU just incase it was my PSU that was crapping out.

I put the Twin Frozr II in (still using my old SeaSonic S12 430W), booted up, everything looks good, uninstalled old 11.2 drivers just incase, ran driver sweeper, installed 11.2 drivers again, rebooted comp.. and the moment of truth.. VIOLA! Boots up perfectly fine, ran Windows Experience Index and got a score of 7.8, as opposed to a 1.0 for the Twin Frozr III, and 7.7 of the HIS 6850 IceQ Turbo I was replacing. I've already ran roughly 20 cycles of the Unigine Heaven 2.5 benchmark, no artifacting, or instability what so ever. I then loaded up MSI Kombuster, stress tested for about an hour, again no problems. I opened up task manager and saw that my cpu was only at like 1% with Kombuster running.. so I thought to myself hmph.. I wonder if my PSU (SeaSonic S12-430W) could handle Kombuster and Intel Burn Test 2.5 at the same time.. and it could! I let those two run for about 10 minutes and stopped because I was afraid of putting too much load on the PSU (because these two programs put an unrealistic amount of load on your system), but in these 10 minutes everything seemed perfectly fine.

I've already setup an RMA for the Twin Frozr III for a replacement because I really liked the build quality of these MSI cards, so I'm stayin with it.

Just something of note that I thought was hilarious at Fry's.. when I was at the power supply section, I purposely pretended that I didn't know jack squat, but I'd consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable on what parts to get, and what to stay away from. So I'm standing there with my MSI 6870 Twin Frozr II, and the guy asks me, "What kind of wattage are you looking for?", and I say "Oh, I'm not really sure, just something thats enough to power this.. *show him the video card*". And then the guy has the nerve to say "I think you'll need at least 1000W minimum." I didn't even say anything after that, just walked away LOL.

Anway, sorry for my long posts.. I'm in a lecture right now thats extremely boring so, I'm just ranting right now ahaha. I'll give an update when the Twin Frozr III arrives on Saturday. Thanks for checking out my thread!

So... in short.... bigger PSU + ran driver sweeper and thing works :)

Should have done that from the start heheh, still nice to see you got it working.

Wow that store guy recammended a 1,000watt PSU for a 6870... I think he just wanted to sell a bigger unit so the shop scores more cash though :) But thats what sales people are for right?

MSI Radeon HD 6870 HAWK has a nice cooler, putting it at 26 dB in idle, and 31 dB in load (silent mode). (from looking at TPU review of the card)

pic of the awesum cooler:

apperntly uses memory chips are made by Hynix, so OC of ram can go up high, and has a voltage controller thats supported in afterburner.

Sorry, I typed too much so its confusing to read ahah.. let me summarize..

MSI 6870 HAWK not working properly, went to fry's to pick up higher wattage PSU and a MSI 6870 Twin Frozr II, first step at troubleshooting was only putting in the new Frozr II, NOT the PSU, uninstalled drivers + driver sweeper, install new 11.2 drivers and reboot, everythings boots up fine. Conclusion, MSI HAWK arrived DOA.

*EDIT* and yea.. the HAWK cooler looks so nice. Just a heads up that anyone with an Antec Solo will have to modify case to fit it.

I think your proved the first TFIII was partially borked. Thats what happens with some, when you load drivers. Much more of the cards, circuits are used. Without drivers, your getting simple VGA 'safe' mode functionality.
