Checkerboard effect on monitor - Cause???

I posted this here because the Video forum says it's about "products."


The image on the monitor suddenly goes to a "checkerboard" pattern.

This has started happening only recently, while playing games like Age of Empires 3 and Far Cry.

It occurs within the game, but after exiting the game, the checkerboard video display persists on the desktop.

Has anybody else here solved this problem?

so it hasn't ever happened outside of a game?

does rebooting kill the checkerboard ?

if not, definitely hardware related.

if so, possibly either the monitor or the video card.
could be a high heat issue. you could try using some fans.

Yes it only starts happening during games. It never happened outside a game.
But if it happens in a game, then you close the game, it continues to happen on the desktop.

Yes!

could be a high heat issue. you could try using some fans.

I've got good cooling.

But I just had an idea. Maybe the video card itn't seated properly. I'll pull it out & reseat it.

scott, I feel your pain. I've been where you are at: Checkerboard in games but not out of them. For me it was the video card, plain and simple. It was an ASUS Ti4200 when the Ti cards were the hot cards. It was still under warrenty but ASUS would never respond. Last time I buy one of their cards.

Anyway, from my experience it sounds like you have a dying video card and there really is nothing you can do about it. However, to make sure try the following: 1) check your voltage and/or 2) switch out cards if you can and see if you get the same problem. Try the card in another PC.

It may be your monitor, but I highly doubt it because it is only occurring in games where the load is considerably more intense. I'd start shopping for a new card. Sorry.

scott, let me add one more thing. Is your system overclocked? I know of someone who had artifacting due to his overclocking and when he eased back the artifacting in gaming disappeared. It was load stress on the card between the ocing and the game's demands.

If you don't overclock then I maintain a dying video card. Good luck.

Oh, yeah, one more thing. Did you check your vid card's fan to see if it was working?

Yes, I'm OC's 25%.

I'll ease back to stock and also will chack the gpu fan. Thanks again! Good ideas!
