I was looking through Autotrader.com locally to see what prices were on used low mileage GTOs when I stumbled upon this ad: Text

Here is the response I got (read up from the bottom)...I haven't replied yet. Any suggestions? I did file a complaint with IC3 but I don't expect they'll do anything about it.

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in purchasing my car.
The car is as good as new so you don't have to worry. Here are the most
important details about the car:
- US car (US model, US specs)
- odometer in Miles, speedometer in Miles per Hour (MPH)
This car meets all Environmental Regulations in the USA (DOT, EPA).
it has a clear title issued in US and it can be registred anytime
under your name without a problem. It's absolutely perfect, it has a clear
title, has never been repaired, never been involved in any type of accident or
had any paint or body work done! I live in London, United Kingdom, now
where European specs are different from the American ones and it costs me too
much driving this car legally here and also there is nobody interested in
buying it here that's why I am selling it so cheap hoping to find a buyer in
the US where it belongs.
Thanks for your interest, please feel free to email me any questions or
concerns you may have.

Respectfully,

I am interested in the GTO you have advertised on Autotrader.com. I'm in North County San Diego, could I take a look at it this weekend? Is there any damage to the car? Salvage title? I'm curious why you've priced it at $18k.

dont' we have a few members in london??? i am sure you can search them out and they might be able to look 🙂 sounds like a scam though

Might as well give him your bank account number and SSN and then western union 10k in cash for the up-front shipping costs.

Didn't someone post this exact same conversation here within the past week? I mean the first response talking about specs and living in London sounds verbatim like a response that someone else had posted. It didn't involve a GTO (can't remember the car involved), and I think it was from a listing on Autotrader. Gonna have to bust out the search and dig up that other thread.

This thread involves a BMW X5 listed on Craigslist.

Ask for a VIN.

There is a VIN #6G2VX12495L306795 listed in the autotrader ad. Could be from any car though or copied from another GTO ad listed somewhere else.

Sorry, I didn't actually click on the autotrader link.🙂

ask for the escrow companies phone number..
usually dealing with escrow is safer that dealing with a regular individual.

you may fail to see the point of the escrow service. they (the scammer) setup a fake company and give you all necessary info. then when deal is done, they skip out and when you call the company, you find out it was a front.

This scam is as old as the hills.... there are probably two or three scam ads for every car type in every search location on AutoTrader....

Why in the world would someone ship a US car to the UK, then turn around and ship it back to the US?

real easy to find out if a company is legit... and ive bought 3 vehicles using escrow services over ebay as well..
never been scammed. just do your homework on the company.
