Check This Out Seti Folks!!!!!

If this can be adapted for RC5....Well better not let Russ see it😉

It does raise some interesting thoughts....

That's nuts! We have people writeing the software that don't give a shoot about the speed of there client and refuse to include SSE/3dnow! support. On the other hand we have nuts designing stuff like this! Do you think it's even real?

The cool thing is that they took surplus military CPUs. Instead of guiding missiles aimed at us, they'll be looking for aliens.

I don't see why this couldn't be adapted to RC5 as well. If they have a mini version of linux running on the card, getting RC5 to work souldn't be too much more work.

It's about $500 for 9 units / 24 hours. Russ is going with $25 MB's ($150 for 6 of them), say $25 for used ATX PS (another $150), 6 used C400 CPU's (maybe $50 each or $300), 6 nics ($10 each or $60), 32 meg of PC100 is running 30ish (another $180), and 6 used floppies ($5 each or $30). That's $870, and that assumes that you don't need keyboards or videocards.

All-in-all, this is a very cost effective way to increase WU production. Of course, the whole idea of SETI is to use the extra processing power that you already have ....

I quote...

<< SETI@home Team Lamb Chop devotee zAmboni wrote in with a product that is...unusual, to say the least. It's a dedicated SETI-crunching PCI card! It can be equipped with up to 6 CPUs and contains a stripped down version of Linux as well as the SETI client in flashable ROM. zAmboni points out that it may violate the SETI@home license agreement, but at the very least, it's a pretty clever idea >>

Worrisome at least?

Its a great idea, but until some people actually beta test this or buy a few, its really mysterious. Go read about this topic at slashdot. They bring up a few interesting points that really should be considered before buying one.
