Having surfed through many experiment sites (usually looking for oddball experiments to do as interesting demonstrations) I've stumbled across the following experiment numerous times, but never tried it. Well, til last night.
If you have a grape and a microwave in the house, get your butt off the internet and do the following (you'll be back to your computer in 3 minutes, so don't fret too much)
Slice grape about 3/4 of the way through, from side to side. Fold the grape so that the two halves are still connected by the skin, with the inside part facing up. Put it in the microwave that way. Run the microwave on high for about 10 or 15 seconds... by which time, you should see what happens... incredible!
I showed this to my wife after I did it... I went through a whole story of how I read on an internet site that most grapes this time of year are imported from other countries... The other countries don't ban the use of mercury, cadmium, and other metals in agriculture, and as a result, the grapes from those countries are filled with metal they absorbed. The metal keeps the grapes fresher looking for longer.... My wife believed every word I said as I microwaved the grape and she saw what happened. Have fun with gullible coworkers!!!
