A friend had the worst exsperience! He downloads some executable from a rumanian mirror site, runs it, it was somekind of scientific calculator. after a while the machine starts to smell really bad, the machine stalls, he turns it off, takes of the cover, and the bios is SMOKIN'!!! this is 4-5 years ago... my guess is a program that changes variables in the bios very fast all the time untill it goes POOOFFF... is it possible? this was his story, and i saw the bios chip, smelled it, danm right, all f****** up!

Ummm software is not going to be able to make the BIOS burn up. It could overwrite the BIOS so that it no longer works but that is a long shot also.

Probably just ran his cpu at 100% load and his cooling was too sucky to take it.

4-5 years ago a chip could take a lot more abuse. Either we're reaching technical limitations of microprocessor technology or the chipmakers don't bother trying to make their stuff run cooler.
