Check Question

My friend gave me a check for $400 to pay for his trip. However, he made out the check to the organization. Instead of putting "XY Tours", he just put "XY". So i called him up and asked him about changing it, and the person at the agency said I could just cross out "XY" and put "XY Tours", initial it (with his initials), and everything would be set.

The deadline for payment was today and I was wondering if there was a possibility his check might be denied? He has no debts or criminal record or whatnot.

Initialing changes on checks is a very common practice. However, it is usually only allowed by the individual who wrote the check. If you get permission from your friend I doubt any one would be the wiser and no one would care.

Why not just add the word TOURS?

If he is not gonna press charges for altering the check, then it is no problem. My bet would be that if you deposited it to the XY Tours account it will go thru with just XY written on it. If you are leery of just depositing it, then just change it and initial it. the less amount of alteration there is, the less chance it will be red flagged.

When I did accounting type stuff for a grocery chain, you can get away with a lot. If you just need to slightly alter the name then it is no big deal. Hell, we never even initialed them. It is not like you are making some massive change that will obviously not be the intended recepient of the funds.

I would, honestly, just deposit as it is. I don't think the bank would reject it for leaving out the word tours.
