Check payable to two people, what are my options?

So I received a security deposit check back, it?s payable to 2 people (myself and former roommate).

What are my options to cash it here?

1. Endorse it myself and deposit it
2. Mail it to him, have him endorse it, then get it back endorse it myself, and then deposit it
3. Have both of us at the same bank and cash it

I?ve already bought his share out, so obviously option 1 or 2 would be preferred.

You AND Him?

You OR Him?

Or just both names with no and/or?

If there's an "and" in there, you need BOTH signatures, in which case, option 3 is your best choice.

(do you trust him to sign it and send it back, or will he keep it and try to do what you suggested in option 1?)

Option 1. It should be fine to deposit it, unless what Boomer said is the case.

I'd go with 1 as well. But I'd probably go to a teller and not the ATM to deposit (but just hand them the check and not mention the two names - see what happens).

Boomer is correct, if there word AND is in there, you need both signatures so I'd do option 3. Otherwise its payable to either of you and you should be able to cash it fine.

If you're still on speaking terms, you would be wise to inform him what you're going to do just in case someone at the bank starts investigating.
