Check out what my boss just handed me......

jeeez guys, lol! I was looking for some recommendations to practice some UNIX fun. 😉

Look at were you at. If it doesn't require a state of the art video card, it's beyond what they understand or what they care anything about.

That thing would be fun to play around with. It would absolutely rock if I just got handed one for free.

See if you can get something like icecast or vlc working on it and show off your skills to your boss. I know more about Linux then Solaris, but it would be fun.

Setup a Apache web server or something. Learn why people are willing to pay and depend on these types of hardware and OS. Learn what the pros already know... 🙂

I can stumble through unix and run some scripts (whoopy), but apache is a good idea. Hrm, I think I'll try to set up sendmail, SMTP, and a tftp server just for kicks.

Ok, finally got some time to hit this Netra tomorrow. I've decided I'm going to install Solaris from a kickstart server (never done that before), then install and configure TFTP, SNMP, and Sendmail. Then I'll set up some accounts and point to an LDAP server that we have setup.

Any other suggestions for a UNIX newb?

I've got a quick an dirty doc for setting up Apache 2 on Solaris. Heh, I also have one on settup up mod_auth_ldap in apache 2. 😛

And Coldfusion MX, Apache 2, and Solaris. And some docs on basic unix commands...

Actually, I bought a great FreeBSD book, but now its in storage. Ugh. But yea, I'm fortunate that I have a a good releationship with the unix engineers here. They said they would help me out when I need it.
