Traditional Animation (pencil test)

Hey all,

As a 3D animator, it's always nice to get back to the roots and do a real animation...one where all the timing has to be worked out from drawing to drawing, and the drawings must be consistent. So, I just did this little pencil test.....

Thought y'all might like to see it.

You may not have a quicktime plugin? I am about to update the movie so that if you don't, it will prompt you to DL it....

Thank you guys...

I have a ton of stuff that I have wanted to put on the web.... I just never have the time. Most of it is 3D stuff.

Hehehe...

No, Chef, I didn't ever post that special MOV. But I agree, a few people would probably enjoy that thoroughly. I thik I have a compressed version of that around here somewhere.... :)
As for "Stop! Stop! Stop!....I gotta puke!" Unfortunately, that sound bye, along with all the pictorial documentation of that night, are history. :( Sometimes I wish I had backed it up before I deleted it. Oh well.

Wow, your my hero - hand drawn animation. How long did that take you - 40 hours? Want to make graphics (any and all kinds of graphics, movs whatever) for the good of Fire? If so let me know =)

I am in awe of your talent. I can't draw anything worth the paper it's drawn on... talent like yours is rare and very impressive! Excellent work!

Hehe...

Thanks all. Pretty warm response. I didn't realize how starved for pencil animations people were. I know I have always loved them. It seems that, in this day and age, everyone has a copy of 3DS Max or Flash, and everyone is an animator. It's really refreshing to go back and actually ANIMATE. See, if you look at the MEANING of the word animate, it means to "give life" to something. Even though I am primarily a 3D animator, I still don't think the ARTIST is truly giving life to anything unless he/she is directly doing so with a pencil. In all kinds of computer animation, the artist DIRECTS the COMPUTER how to give life, and it is all taken care of from there.

As for making graphics for Nicefire.... Even if that were a paying gig (which I'm assuming it's not), I have enough going on with teaching classes (undergraduate animation), maintaining an animation lab, and doing the rest of my work to have time for something like that. But thanks anyway! I'm flattered. :)

Amazing! I am definitely impressed.

That pencil animation blows away much of the lame flash stuff (cheese anyone?) that I've been seeing lately.

Thanks, Eug...

That's kinda the point I was making: When something (in this case "animation") becomes too easy, everyone becomes an expert overnight, and people forget what the real thing was like..... It's like, when desktop publishing programs first came out (like Publisher, Print Shop), EVERYONE suddenly was a graphic designer. Same with Flash. And to put it bluntly, I find traditional animation MUCH more enjoyable than flash...
