Now when someone pisses me off, I can just turn this on and blind the sh|t out of them. Although deliberate AIDS-infected blood injection is much crueler.

I don't know if it does, it probably just needs to warm up.

I want one, but not for $700.

So ya gotta hold it down for 2 seconds before it shoots? Helps prevent accidental de-ballage?

It's just that
"- There is now a safety key and connector that must be inserted into the laser and turned before it will operate, and there is a safety dongle that must be inserted into the bottom of the laser as well.

- There is a 2 second delay after you click the "on" button before the laser will produce a beam.

- This laser is now FDA certified and legal. The above two changes had to be implemented to bring this laser into compliance."

Seems the FDA required it, so I would presume it someone of safety issue. But say was said over at slashdot, just wait until someone doesn't see the laser come on right away and looks into it.

strange

IIRC, someone had a thread about these lasers a couple of weeks ago.... they had their own photos of a laser beam going up through the sky.
Cool stuff, but a little on the expensive side.

That's actually pretty cheap for that type of laser. The last one I bought was for in the lab was ~250mW and was ~$4000. Of course, it came with some focusing optics and some other items, but still pretty pricey.

These are dangerous lasers and there are restrictions in place governing their legal operation in the USA. For instance, before you can legally "fire" a laser this powerful into the sky, you must first obtain an FAA waiver (some observatories aim powerful lasers like this into the sky to help with their adaptive optics). Similarly, if you intend to use a laser like this in a public place, you're required to file documentation with the FDA. If you don't follow these rules and you get caught, your ass is grass.

So while the company is probably correct in that these lasers are legal (to possess), the actual use of these lasers may not be. One wonders if the company could be held partially responsible for any damages or injuries from the indiscriminate use of one of these.

this is f****g insane. Yes, it says that the use of this laser is illegal.

However, i can see many morons buying that thing and doing even more moronic things with it...sadly....and others already pointed out the latest news.

Nevertheless, this is quite impressive.
