This sounds like the perfect job for me. Plus, it would likely give me a significant pay raise. I probably have a good chance of getting it, too. On top of my experience, my dad's been there for almost 15 years.

Is that kick-ass, or what?

Sounds like a glorified help desk position to me. In other words, bottom of the food chain.

You are in a supervisor/manager position righ now correct? Even if this job pays 5 grand more, I'd stick with with your current position due to the title of supervisor on your resume.

It'll pay off exponentially once you get a couple years and a 4 year degree and or a couple certifications under your belt.

Just my $.02

I"m with vi_edit, sounds like a cheap tech job to me, if that was "director of" then I'd say differently!

Guys,

He's 18 years old. At this point in his career, the income is far more important than the job title or duties. He's facing several years of hefty expenses.

Yes Russ, and if I'm not mistaken, its also one of the most debt free times he'll ever be in.

No home mortgage, no children, at this time, no car loan.

It's better to be at the top of the food chain than at the bottom.

The supervisor title will pay off. Besides Viper, don't you get tuition re-imbursement where you are right now? If so, milk that for all it's worth. If you jump ship and take this other job, you'll miss out on your old employer paying for your training. And, you don't even know if this company will pay for it. And if they do, you probably won't even qualify for tuition re-imbursement for 6 months to a year.

It's those little perks that don't figure into a salary that really, really add up.

On my current job...

Yes, I'm sort of in a supervisor position. Only two weeks ago, in an effort to boost our service level, they pulled us from all supervisory reponsibilities, & put us back on the phones. On top of that, the people on the next level up from me have been there for ~2 years usually, & only make $3K a year more than me... And it's salaried. So I have NO intentions of sticking with their "management" path. Yes, if I stuck around for like 5 years I could probably make semi-decent money.

But...

I'm beginning to hate the job with a passion. They're constantly harassing us to improve our numbers, right now they're expecting 10% idle time, they're cutting the powers we have to actually help customers, & generally fvcking things up to the point where I don't want to be a part of it. Most of the people in my position there are looking for a way out. This looks like mine.

Plus, the benefits are comparable to the ones I have now. Less vacation time, but they'll pay 85% of ALL costs for school, not just tuition. They even bought my dad a TI-92 for his calculus classes. As for pay, although I dont' know for sure, I'm guessing a 30 - 40% minimum raise over what I'm making now. That'd push me at least $30,000, probably more.

Russ is right, too. Right now I want the money to take the classes I want. The extra $5K+ a year would be a BIG help towards that, as my income right now doesn't afford much extra. Since I have to pay for my classes up front, I need the cash.

What are you guys talking about? Who cares if it doesn't pay as much as his current job(yet). More importantly this sounds like a job that he would ENJOY! There's nothing better than being able to work at a job that is similar to your interests or hobby. If he would enjoy this job more than his current job, GO FOR IT. After you put in a little time I'm sure you'll be making much more than you are at your current job. Manager/Supervisor doesn't mean you get paid bank. Have you seen a manager/supervisor role in a fast food chain? No way, I'm not havin it. Did you guys see the excitement in Vipers writing? I did. Viper, these guys are right, it is a "get your foot in the door" job but there is a lot of potential. If you're looking to get into a good tech-network admin-project leader type job in the near future. This is where you start. It will look good on your resume too!! I started the same way and I'm getting paid well for what I love to do. Don't let anyone discourage you if you know what you want bro. Good Luck!

tdw...

Why do you think I edited in the "Company" and "Product?" Given my geographic location, the company name, and/or the product, it'd be pretty to easy to figure out where the job was. I'm pretty sure this offer hasn't been publicized yet.

I wouldn't be stupid enough to do that.

Soybomb...

I have a nice 600x600 dpi laser printer & Word 2000 here at home. I wouldn't do it at work. Tomorrow when I'm in town I'll pick up some good quality paper & spend my afternoon writing/updating my resume & getting something presentable. Then Friday, maybe, I'll drive down & hand it in personally.

Here are some criteria to go by.

1. Not thing is better than get paid to do something you love.

2. Rather get a slightly less money to work at a place where I get along with people.

3. Career move is much better in a large corporation than a mom & pop shop. (mom & pop shop is when you want to retire)

4. If you work with a large corp, they will pay for your school if they need too & feel that you are keen enough to excel in your career.

5. ?If you don?t work go to school.? A quote I got from a former client. He is a very successful business owner and has a Master in business. It is much better to get a job and get them to sponsor you for your education. Take it from a guy that spends 8 years in College/University that have papers come out of his a$$, but still paying for the student loan :(

Go for it Viper. There's no greater regrets in life than an opportunity that you passed up.

Sounds like a great deal. I work for Boeing (for the past 13 years) and they pay for all schooling and such, provided you pass the class, so I'm looking to take some computing classes and get my CCNA. The beauty of Boeing is there are thousands of jobs with-in the company so I can change jobs with out leaving the company and losing my benifits.

I take it the company your looking at is big enough to move around in once you get established?

I wouldn't stay there for very long. Basically another stepping stone towards what I want. They're primarily a fabrication company, but they have a large network connecting everything from their engineering department to human resources. I'd basically be going there for:

1) Money
2) Getting out of my current job
3) School benefits (I have them where I am now)

Take the job -- nothing worse than sticking with a job that is taking a large turn for the worse.

BTW, I wanted to mention that a local radio station here in Atlanta is having a contest for choice of a new car -- one of the cars is a Viper GTS. :)

Update:

I just received an e-mail from the manager of the position. I have an interview scheduled for Thursday, at 10 AM.

Apparently they had quite a few applicants, so I figure I'm lucky to get an interview. Good resume, plus the little fact that my dad's worked there for 14 years & there are lots of people there that know about me worked wonders, I guess.

Cool, I may get out of this sh!thole yet!

:D
