A video of a giant shark taken off Molokai is drawing some attention on the Internet.

A crew including University of Hawaii oceanographer decided to post the 2006 video on YouTube to help educate people on sharks in Hawaiian waters.

The shark estimated to be 18 feet long with six gills is a deep-sea variety known as Hexanchus griseus.

The video was taken from Hawaii Undersea Research laboratory's Pisces V submersible anchored 3,000 feet deep about two miles from Molokai.

UH professor Eric Vetter says he felt the sub move when the shark nudged against it.

He says the crew believes the shark was attracted by large chunks of ahi the crew was using to attract scavangers for research. He says little is known about the population of that type of super shark around Hawaii.

Would be cool to have something recognizable next to it for size comparison.

They have no swim bladder but remain buoyant thanks to their oil-filled liver. No gas to compress.

That one looks quite primitive, particularly its markedly heterocercal tail type.
