A co-worker of mine is always bragging how his brother is THE home theater expert. Today we were talking about a PC he is about to buy. It comes with a DVD drive and he doesn't need it, so he said he's going to sell it to his brother. I asked why the expert doesn't have one already, and he said that he has one, but the person who sold it to him didn't include the software CD. It turns out that the DVD drive has just been sitting there for over a year, because the expert wasn't smart enough to download the software off the net or buy it on CD for 10 bucks at the local computer store. Whoa. Oh yeah, he also mentioned that his brother invented a whole new method to have true surround sound with just two speakers. How? By placing one of his speakers in the front left corner of his room, and the other in the right rear corner. Man.

It is always possible that your co-worker's brother is a knowledgable home theatre enthusiast, but your co-worker is so dumb that he doesn't fully understand what his own brother is talking about half of the time. I've seen that before a few times.
 
Theoretically, it is possible to have 'surround sound' indistinguishable from two speakers... even from one.. I don't feel like explaining why... but basically, we hear surround sound from two ears.

No it's not. Just because we hear with two ears doesn't mean that we can only hear from two sources.
 
I also invented a whole new method to listen to true surround sound with just two ears. How? By placing one of my ear on the left of my head, and the other on the right! :Q
 
I've invented a way to reproduce surround sound without any speakers.

Not tellin though........... nyaaaaaaaaaaaa

But, it does mean we can re create 360 sound for a particular location in the room with 2 sources.
 
diabolic, surround sound was primarily invented for things like theatres and people with odd sized/positioning rooms.
I would drop my HT setup on the spot for a nice 2 channel setup, with a sub of course. I wouldn't think twice.

we hear surround sound based on constructive and destructive interference... not where the source is located... so yes it is possible to emulate surround sound with 2 speakers (tho not the way this guy has his setup...) how do you think EAX and other virtual surround sound algorithms work?
 
Vip, what are you talking about? The whole point of surround sound is for the sound to surround you. If someone fires a gun behind the camera in a movie, you're supposed to hear a gun fire behind you. How can you possibly achieve this with two monopole speakers positioned in front of you?

Look up EAX and they might have an explaination, or even a demo that can be played in stereo, but which will do surround sound.
 
EAX simulates surround and doesn't sound nearly as good.


only because its a crappy implimentation😛 even aureal was better. theoretically it is possible to get perfect surround sound🙂 theoretically. u'd have to account for the room, speakers and sh*t though/

think about how you actually figure out where sounds are with your two simple microphone ears? audio cues... thats why it techinically should be possible to fake out the ears.
 
Actually, you can get surround sound feel from just two speakers. The only downside is you need extremely high quality equipment to notice. I have heard it myself when listening to a pair of B&W Nautlilus speakers, not bad at £35,000 a throw! You would think the room was full of 30 speakers, but it's not.
