Hitachi, LTD.'s new 8GB Mikey drive is shown with dominoes to demonstrate its smaller profile. Mikey is a new miniature hard drive from Hitachi that can store several thousand songs or pictures in 8 GB of storage. (01/06/05 AP photo)

Too fragile.

I need something that is 100% waterproof.

Sandisk Cruzers have been holding up surprisingly well. Of course they cannot be used while wet but what do you expect for $45?

Holy crap...that's almost small enough to fit inside an SD card (would it fit in a Memory Stick?) At the very least you could fit a few onto a CF card or in a jump drive.

Applications are endless: 8GB iPod Micro, cellphones, PDAs, music players etc. etc.

And will this be sold to compete with USB jump drives?

Some manufacturers are already doing this. I know high capacity Rosewill pocket drives use a small disk assembly.

Are hard drives really favorable to flash memory though for things like cell phones? Sure, they can be just as small nowadays and hold way more, but they still have physcial, mechanial, moving parts. Seems way less reliable to me.

But bigger MP3 players, PDAs, etc. all equal awesome. However, all-in-one phones = stupid.
