My wife has a neice who is anorexic who has been trying to get better for years. She is nowhere near this level, but it seems like it's a difficult mental illness to overcome.

Reading the story, I think it has a lot more to do with her family and the people she's personally encountered. Looking at the obesity rate in the country and the prevalence of those who think healthy is too skinny, I suspect the opposite of what you say is more of a problem on a society level. That's not to say anorexia in cases like this arent a tragedy.

What a sad story. It says that she has even seen a specialist to try to fix her weight, but he couldn't get her to gain any. I guess after being anorexic for that long, certain parts of your system just shut off.
