I work in a sign shop, and it's a pretty nice job. We do all sorts of the signs and designs for Lexington and Central Kentucky. Recently, some of our work has made it to the big time with the University of Kentucky basketball team doing good things on the court.

One of these things is the virtual Tubby Smith bobblehead doll. For those who don't know who Tubby is, he's the coach of the UK Wildcats. First, here is the link to the website for which we did some stand-up, large Tubby bobbleheads: virtualbobblehead.com. Here is a direct link to the pic shown on the front page at this time, Ashely Judd kissing one of the stand-ups.

The stand-up you see in that pic and any other was made personally by my co-worker (my brother actually) and myself. I didn't draw the thing, don't get me wrong, but we did make it after the inkjet printed out the picture.

EDIT: A sideways pic of Tubby himself with one of the stand-ups. right here

Basically, we have a 6' HP inkjet printer at the shop. One of the designers with virtulbobblehead.com came over for half of a day, and working with our designer on the graphic. He had it mostly ready, but some things needed to be done with photoshop stuff.

The image was printed out, and we basically trimmed 10 of these things by hand. That's why you'll see a thin white outline around most of the graphic. Time permitting, that outline wouldn't have been there, but we were rushed to do these things. Then, we use our 5'x8' router bed to route out the shape. The shape is routed out of PVC, which is what it sounds like. It's the same material of your household plumbing. Then, we use application tape to lay the entire piece at once on top of routed shape of PVC. Not too hard of a process for this type of "sign", but nice looking anyhow.
