The content is great.

I suggest you use Lorem Ipsum as a space filler. It looks like actual English text and adds to the effect.

Navigation on the left looks distracting. I'm not entirely sure why. Unfortunately, it doesn't all fit in one page, even at 1280x960, but that's nto a big deal.

In your code, I suggest you use XHTML and CSS for it saves space and results in quicker load times. Also, a page that validates is a bug  in my book; looks professional. In a simple layout like you have, a tableless CSS based page would be great. Tables are "icky" at best and should be avoided as much as possible. I also suggest storing your Javascript/CSS externally, just makes things a little cleaner.

Other than that; the page looks great. Nice work!

I've been discussing this....the problem is that I can't do what I need done in CSS...I've learned quite a bit just today...but then still it won't do exactly what I want and renders differently in different browsers which I cannot have.

I like tables...they work great and do exactly what I want. So far CSS is not doing exactly what I want. So until it will, tables it is.

I like the layout. However when I picture a photog website I usually think "black background."

Otherwise it's clean and well done.

Andrew Stiff...I like your name.

There seems to be balance problems. Theres white gaps on the left of bot hteh top and bottom banners due to the bottoms. The left image of the top banner is b&w while the right image on the bottom is in color. And im not so sure about having the content area boxed while the buttons are free floating.

Also the top white page between the end of the page and the top banner is wider than its bottom equivalent

What do you mean it doesn't do anything? READ THE DAMNED OP. It is JUST a layout at this point. My god...some people.

Also - LoKe:

How does it not fit in 1280x960? The part which has the content is only 950 pixels wide....?

I meant in height. I have to scroll down to see the rest of the footer. Again; not a problem.

Not quite sure what you are talking about with the gaps...there is a little blank space here and there yes.

Also the image on the right at the bottom is not color it's a duo-toned B&W photo.

I could put a border around the buttons easily enough...but I dunno if that would look good or not. I'll test it out.

Ahhh...well it wasn't meant to fit all on one page that way as when the content is in there it's going to be longer for the important parts anyway.

Remove the pictures from the bottom. It keeps making me feel like I can scroll down and see the entire picture.

The entire thing looks like a box inside of a box inside of a box...
-Align the photo in the body with the top of the "Welcome" at the top.
-Saying "Welcome" then having "Welcome" as the first word seems redundant. Just get with the point and say what your webpage is for.
-You have about 300 pixels of mostly deadspace before you even get to the "Welcome"... move everything up a bit. I'm at a high resolution and the text just barely starts above the halfway mark.

Overall: For a photography site, it's mostly grey and white, which is boring as all hell. More pictures, more colors, etc.

Perhaps a few cropped thumbnails would work out very well (instead of just one wine glass photo), showing interesting parts of photos that entice people to click on it and see the entire photo (show your best work!) Have it take you to the gallery with navigation to other photos on the side.

My suggestion (still needs more pictures, though):

It looks exactly like every other contemporary blog-ish layout, except with less content. It's entirely uninteresting. It's not ugly or bad, just boring because it looks like so many other sites.

And the layout is not the most important aspect of a website. I'd rather you put up a directory listing full of photos than a beuatifully designed page with no content.

I agree.

As far as it being just a layout... understandable, but the further you get in to a layout/site, the harder it is to change/add things and still have it look really good.
