Hi All,

My wife and I recorded this video for a contest sponsored by HP in celebration of their 35th anniversary of the calculator. We had a fun time making it, and ours was chosen as one of 8 finalists, so we won a trip to Hollywood to attend the 'HP Golden Calculator Awards'. Check it out and let me know what ya think!

Dude, I've been smitten with HP calculators since 1988. I still have my HP 28S and use it as often as I can. Perhaps I'll reteach myself to program on it. I used to be able to do some amazing stuff with it.

So I voted for your video, but it was kinda goofy. I guess that was your intention. 😀

Definitely, I know exactly what ya mean. When I was about 7 I used my dad's HP calculator to write out the entire multiplication tables up to 100x12 and gave it to my teacher. I didn't even get extra credit for it! I used HP calculators all the way through 3 college degrees, and am especially smitten with my 48G and my 12C. When I learned about this contest I knew I had to figure out something.

Actually, the best ideas for the video came from my wife. Am I ever lucky! 🙂 And yes, I was definitely shooting for goofy -- figured there would be quite a few 'dry' submissions so I wanted to try to stand out from the crowd -- guess it worked! Now I just got to see if I beat the other 7 finalists 🙂
 
The neatest thing I've seen done with an HP calculator is programming it to play Tetris. My friend Craig and I got our 48Gs to play Tetris. We spent our "free" time in the Gulf War playing Tetris. This was while we were not operating the nuke plant or doing maintenance on it.

During nuke school they wouldn't let us use our HP calcs as they'd do too much work for us. We had to use some chumpy Casio calc that didn't do RPN. Man, talk about inconvenient. After using RPN exclusively for a while, it's hard to not use it.

Back to the contest. I can't get to the page where I can view the videos again. Once you vote you're done seeing the entries? 🙁
 
That's awesome! I'll need to get you to send over your tetris file if you still have it 😉 RPN is a dream come true, it's true. And converting back, as you note.... simply awful. It's like going back to a Kia once you drive a Mercedes.

Wouldn't we WANT the calculators to be doing all the work? Nothing like encouraging human error on nuke plants... 😱

I've noticed the weirdness about the videos too. I think it's a security feature to let people vote only once. The only thing I've found to view the videos again is to clear your cookies. Alternatively, if you use more than one browser, you'll be able to view the page in that browser. (For example, you can try firefox if you voted in IE). If neither of those works for you I can try to dig up a different link.
 
I wish I still had it. As a matter of fact, I don't even have the 48 anymore. All I have is my 28S and a 32SII. 🙁

Cool, thanks for letting me know. I admit it was tough to try to find a cool topic related to calculators. Appreciate the feedback! I've gotten a spread of responses from 'it was the BEST to it was the WORST'. Any suggestions to make it better?

Thanks 😉 The secret to being in the top 8, is to apply for a contest that doesn't have too many other submissions 🙂 They had 16 submissions so our odds were 50-50 to be a finalist.

We didn't exactly do post-production voice-over, but by asking you probably noticed the audio was a little messy. It turns out my wife spoke too quietly so I stripped the audio out of the .wmv file I created and then volume boosted her segments. It also of course boosted the ambient noise which causes the pitch of the background noise to be strange while she's talking...

Let me hunt and see if I can turn up any other pics of my beautiful wife 😉 stay tuned...

Hi All,

I'll be out of town this week first on business then attending the award ceremony I mentioned earlier. It should be exciting. I'll come report back in about a week! Rumor is they will have invited some celebrities to the event as well.. I'm curious who that might be 😉
