I am building a new Athlon 64 system. I want to get more into gaming, but don't want to overkill the budget. Here is what I am looking at:
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum Socket 939 $129 at newegg -$25 rebate through 8/31
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130484

ATI Radeon X800 XL PCIE 256 I have an offer to buy one for $180
http://shop.ati.com/product.asp?sku=2634288§ion_id=8

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Retail $146
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103537

OCZ OCZ Performance Series 1GB (2 x 512MB) $115
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227031

I have a new Antec case (without the 24 pin PS), a HD, DVD burner already. I only have a 15 lcd, so will upgrade that soon. I really like the Neo4 platinum because of dual gig lan ports, and the option for RAID 5 down the road. I would prefer to stick with socket 939. Can anyone provide a better deal on a mobo, or an equivalent option? Also, any advice on the RAM? I don't plan on overclocking right away, but I may want to down the road. I mostly picked this RAM for the looks. I also believe that I don't need a 24 pin PS, can someone confirm this for me?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you could take a look at my FS/FT thread, that would be helpful as well. I am planning on buying on 8/31.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Sorry for not searching, I found this link just below mine that is looking at a similar system. I still have some questions regarding my choice of RAM, and PS. Link

Maybe an Abit An8 Ultra, cuz of the passively cooled southbridge.
u could also buy decent memory for less. lets say the value series from Kingston, Corsair, Infineon etc for about $40 per 512mb. i dont think that the heatsinks do any good, though it looks nice.
the rest is okay, the x800xl for that price is a great deal.
what hsf do u want to use? Thermalright or Zalman have vg stuff.

Only a little side note. My brother got an MSI K8N Neo4 (Platinum I believe). Anyway, he had a little difficulty with the sound. When I did a google search on that, I ended up in a thread in this very forum. Lots of people liked that board, lots of people were fuming about it.
Some people are real horny about DFI boards though. There was a long discussion about that on the Atari forums.

I think the sound issue is related to the integrated audio requiring -5V in order to work (though I think this was only for the SLI boards), so if your PSU doesn't have -5V it wouldnt work. Given that it sounds like he has a 20-pin Antec Truepower PSU, this shouldn't be an issue.

Oh, and having a 24-pin PSU is *not* necessary with this board (just noticed the question in the first post).

Thanks for the advice. ATI has a retail accomodation program to get some cards about 1/3 off of price.

I will look into the other mobo. Thanks everyone for the input.
