since my current setup (1.4 tualatin) had problems and i had to drop back to a PII-266 i really need something to carry me for a little bit till some of the things i'm looking for become available/affordable (maybe ~2 years)
mainly be used for downloading/raring plus has a raid card that tends to peg the cpu (even though it's raid-1) and the occasional game of diablo II (NO 3-D GAMES!)
already have case, powersupply, harddrive
just looking get motherboard, cpu, memory and video card
my basic requirements are:
1. a gigabyte of ram
2. a video card with quality 2-D (drive a 21" crt at 1600x1200 @ 85 Hz with good text quality)
3. windows 2K3 support
Here's what I'm thinking of:
$59 CHAINTECH VNF3-250 Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250 ATX AMD Motherboard
sort of wary of via chipsets with all those reported pci problems (even though that was a while ago) since most of my storage is going to be hanging off the pci raid card
$76 AMD Sempron 2600+ Palermo 800MHz FSB 128KB L2 Cache Socket 754 Processor - Retail
$83 CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM System Memory - Retail (DDR 400)
$38 (after rebate) PNY GeForce FX 5200(LSFX5264APB) Geforce FX5200 64MB DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail
$256 total
well it does support directx9 should the need ever arise and 2048x1536@75hz means it should cover my needs
my main concern is compatibility of the video card under win2k3. any issues there? do you have to get drivers from PNY or can you use nvidia reference drivers?
and i should add i am NOT interested in overclocking whatsoever
