hey there,

i have hit the wall with my old dell laptop...p4 2.4,1gb ram,60gb 7200, 32mb ati video...

i have a limited budget for my first pc build (!) and after a lot of research i am almost ready for ther rest of my purchases.

this pc will be primarily for audio recording/sequencing with the likes of sonar, reason, sound forge, fruity loops, etc... if i do end up using it for internet i will set up a dual boot...

i am not a gamer and use a single LCD display (DVI)

what i have already :

case and psu
2x1gb Corsair ddr2-667 xms ram

looking to add :

Asus P5B-E
C2D E6600
Asus 7100GS video card

i will also add sata dvd burner, sata hd (i have external storage for samples, wav files) but i am wondering about the above three items...

i do not game so i think the video card should be okay? i want a fanless card, and i am staying with xp for at least another year or two...

intel is supposed to drop prices on july 22, but that would mean at least two more months and i wonder if i would save all that much?

would the e6320 be a better choice if i decide to learn how to do a moderate overclock?

oh yeah, i cannot afford a soundcard upgrade at this time, so i am going to try a pcmcia to pci adapter for my echo indigo i/o (excellent card i got for my laptop)...i saw a review by a person who had success with one of these with his pcmcia soundcard...

thanks

The one thing most people are looking forward to in the July price drops is the Q6600. It's a quad core and it'll cost about $266, compared to the $530 it costs right now. I don't know if those programs support multiple CPU cores or not, but if they do, you might find it in your interests to wait until the price drop and get a quad core. Otherwise everything looks ok.

If you want to save money, you can go with the 6320 or 4400 and overclock it.

If you don't game at all or don't plan on ever doing anything graphically intensive, you may want to look into getting a motherboard with integrated graphics.

thanks

yeah, i will be holding off on quad core...i am already stretching it budget-wise with the e6600 and wonder if the price on that chip would drop enough to warrant waiting for two months+...also i will be taking a massive performance leap with just about any c2d chip, but have read so much about the 6600 on audio forums and can just afford it by sticking with a basic video card, etc.

i'll have to think about maybe going with the 6320 for savings, although i am thinking that by getting the 6600 now i will be good to go for some time to come and can overclock down the road if needed...

i sometimes use Vegas to sync my soundtracks to video, and use photoshop cs a litttle, and want to be able to upgrade my video card later so i am looking for a basic fanless (quieter for recording) 2d card to hold me over...
