check hard drive for bad sectors/errors?

I just received an OEM/bare hard drive from Newegg (my first time buying a non-retail packaged hard drive) and wanted to extensively test the drive for any errors/bad sectors. I've searched online (and unfortunately AT search function is not working) and the only method I've come across utilizes Window's chksdsk. Is there any method or tool/utility that can be used to test/check the hard drive?

THanks.

thanks Blain. I'll check that out. Also, is there anything that can be run in the windows environment?

hmm. seems that HDDScan (also on the above website) runs in the windows environment

For what it is worth, I use CrystalDisk Info, and just do a full format of the HD, via disk manager. Then after a few hours, you can check CrystalDiskInfo, and see if any values have changed...

There is no need to look for any other fancy formatter IMO.
