Check Cashing Rant

I live in Daytona Beach and the nearest branch location for my bank is in Orlando (~1 hour drive). I get off work at 6pm at night, so there is no way I can go there after work. I work in Volusia county at an established business as a contractor paid through a company based out of Georgia.

I received my mileage check from work (regular paychecks are direct deposit) and need the cash now. I recently moved out with my last paycheck and all the extra little expenses (Stocking the fridge, TP, etc.) have added up to leave me broke. I went down to my local Publix to cash the check and the girl tells me that she can't cash it because it is from out of Volusia county. I think to myself... well that is some real bs, because I've cashed checks from out of state at Publix before, so she asks her manager and the manager confirms that they can't cash checks from out of Volusia county. When confronted with the fact that their paychecks come from Publix corporate in Lakeland FL (not sure what county, but definitely not Volusia) and ask if they can cash their checks at Publix they reply that yes they can, but its different then go back to preaching the policy.

I've seen many people get turned away by this same dumb shit redheaded bitch for stupid reasons why she can't cash their checks. I've never cashes a check at this particular location though. So the wife and I drive over to another Publix and the guy cashes the check without a problem. So apparently Publix CAN cash checks from out of the county, but apparently this lazy douchnoodle bitch doesn't feel like doing her god damned job.

I feel better now :)

Glad you feel better. I didn't know you could even cash a check at the grocery store.

cmon you know shes prolly hot.
and her being bitchy makes it all the hotter.
its likely more effort for her to deny cashing your check than the reverse..
she just wanted to let you know who is in control and its her.

Weak ass rant.

There are multiple solutions to this cash flow issue, not the least of which is get an account at a local f'ing bank.

Fvk that. You treat them like shit (or shit on them) and they'll eat it up.

Up until 2 or 3 weeks ago I could deposit my checks using the ATMs at 7-11, but they changed it so that I can't immediately withdraw and need to wait 5 business days. Up till now it hasn't been a problem and 7pm at night isn't any time to be opening an account at a bank :(

Well now you know so the first thing you should be doing is opening up an account at a local bank today, right? :)

LOL @ small bank loyalty.
All it gets you is crap like this.

Sign up for Chase or a similar large bank chain.

Do they charge you a fee for cashing your checks?

A very small fee, but the frequency that I actually need to cash a check "right now" is so small that it isn't a big deal to me.

Chase can blow me. My wife had Chase and they fucked us hard. Bank of America similarly fucked us. I have no problems giving loyalty to a company that has done right by me in the past and help support them with my continued business.

I don't mind cashing the random check at Publix, I'm just ticked at the chick for saying they can't do something that they obviously can. Leave it to ATOT to look at the butterfly when they're getting a big 12" crammed up their bum.

Just because one publix clerk cashed the check and another one didn't did not mean that it is policy that all publix stores can cash any check. The clerk that cashed it may not have been following policy. A lot of places other than the bank you actually have an account with won't cash non-local checks due to liability (check being bad and them having no way to recoup what they lost). Honestly, I cannot blame them one bit for this policy, too many people passing bad checks. Just be thankful you were able to cash the check at all. I'm guessing before too long a lot of places won't cash checks for anyone outside that local city.

And yes, even though their local paychecks are from Publix corporate in Lakeland (Polk county), any publix can cash it because it's their OWN store. They probably have a pretty good idea that their own store won't be passing around bad checks.

It makes no sense on the county thing. Did you ask (after cashing it) what the policy is at the other Publix? If you are that upset, seems like a reasonable complaint, find out who the district manager is talk / write to them. Perhaps the policy is able to be customized to each location, maybe that one store is getting a lot of bad checks?

I complained to ATOT... that should hold more weight that complaining to a district manager... shouldn't it?

Some business want to handle checks from locals.

Easier to track them down if there is a problem.

Just open an account at a local bank for the time that you are in the area.
