I don't know anything when it comes to networking, looking for some suggestions on how to do this. the computers are going to be less then 100ft away from the access point if that makes any difference. Should i get a wireless router and put it near the first computer so i can hardwire it, then get a wireless nic card for the other computer? All i would need is a wireless router and a wireless nic right?

Also can anyone recommend any good "cheap" wireless routers? I need to have speeds of at least 1megabyte/sec. How fast are most wireless systems? Also would i be able to share files between the computers?

Netgear MR814 is an excellent 802.11b router, $20 after rebates. You do NOT need a 802.11g router for simple internet sharing. If you want fast filesharing between those machines, then get 802.11g. I've used the MR814 on a 3mbps cable internet connection and gotten the MAX download speed through the wireless connection. So you shouldn't have any problem with your implementation unless if you have lead walls or something... ;)

Then get 2 wireless nics. You can often find 802.11b PCI and USB nics on sale with rebates these days. I suggest spending about $15 each or less after rebates.

TOTAL: $50 max after rebates

Check the HotDeals forum area for help with finding deals.

I haven't seen that combo for $20. Definately a good deal, assuming you can get a PCI or USB nic. The last combo I saw at Amazon was $20 after rebates I think, but only had a PCMCIA nic... no way to swap it out either... :(

how do these look

Router
NIC

The router has a $25 MIR and the NIC has a $10. Decided that i want to go with the G protocol just for the extra headroom if i ever need to move a big file between the computers. Just to verify, i only need one wireless nic if the first computer is close enough to the router to be hardwired right?

Should I look for some cheaper parts for such a simple little network?

it says the rebate is only good till today (8/31), does that mean they need to recieve the rebate form by today or if today is the last day you can mail it? or does it mean it needs to be purchased by today?
