Cheapest way to send money to Japan

I might need to send $200 to a friend in Japan. He says there's a $40 or so processing fee to cash personal checks in Japan since checks are not as common there. I've thought about PayPal, but I believe I'll still have to pay about $10 in processing fees there too.

Are there any other cheaper alternative methods to sending money over to Japan? I know...I could send cash, but I want something that's relatively safe.

Thanks.

If I had to do that I'd go to Canada Post and say I need a $200 dollar money order sent to Japan. I'd give them the address and money and I'd be done in 5 minutes. I'm sure the USPS could do the same.

Not saying it would be cheaper than $40 but its easy and quick.

International Money Order? They are about $4 but you may be charged a fee to cash it.

What about depositing $200 in his bank in the states and having him take out the money at an ATM (if he has a US bank account)?

International money order will work fine. Assuming that your friend is in a relatively suburban area there should not be any problems cashing it.
