NJ Transit is one alternative...you leave from 30th st. station, transfer at trenton, and end up at penn station in NY...it's around $22-$30 roundtrip depending on the day. This takes 2 hours if you time it right.

The chinatown bus is a good deal at around $20 roundtrip (might be cheaper)...chinatown philly to chinatown ny via crazy high-speed bus. This also takes around 2 hours.

NJ transit just happens to run outside of jersey...i think the website is like www.njtransit.com or something...you can just buy the tickets at 30th st. station. It's some partnership with septa and nj transit or something...whatever it is you can get from 30th st station to penn station for around $20-$30. And I don't think it runs that late, so you might have to greyhound it or something.

Are either of you 21+? I don't know if they have any out there, but Enterprise will rent you a car if you're at least 21. I think a lot of other rental places want you to be 23 or 25.

google nj transit...i took this from NYC to Philly at like 4:45 in the morning before....$17 one way. The station has kiosks where you can purchase your tickets with either cash or credit card.

I also took the Chinatown bus which only costs $10, you may want to choose which one you want to go with by the location of your concert.

NJ Transit drops you of at Penn Station (midtown) while the Chinatown bus drops you off around Canal Street, Chinatown (Lower Manhattan)

I don't think either of these two options have any services running past 1am.

hmm
that nj transit things sounds like it might just do the trick - will be about 11 bucks each way and does run all night :)

hmm - nj transit runs to trenton throughout the night... but it appears septa does not run from newark to philly all night :(

Newark to Philly?
I think you need to provide some more detail. Newark to NYC via Philadelphia is pretty roundabout. You're looking at 5 hours of travel time to go like 10 miles.
