Salvaged from the old rig:

Force3 120GB SSD
tech station & 2 fans

Building a new rig for gaming on a 1080p plasma screen. Goal is to play all games maxed out (with msaa/sgssaa when supported) for the next 3+ years. Budget is ASAP (as small as possible). This system will be used only for gaming and video playing. Which components should I buy new and which ones used? Thinking about starting it off by buying a used (for 6 months) Corsair TX750M for $70...

You should answer the questions in the sticky.

Also note that 670 SLI is complete overkill for your resolution, a single 670 should play almost every title out right now at max everything and I don't know of any titles slated for release in the next year that might push the envelope further GPU wise.

It'd be more cost effective to just stick to a single 670 now, wait 1-2 years till you can't run everything maxed out (or if you don't care, just lower the settings) and just pick up a new more powerful single card and sell your 670.

Not possible with current technology. You could spend $5K and still run into trouble trying to max out all the AA in a game 3 years from now, let alone 4 or 5. It's a better idea to start smaller and upgrade incrementally.

Also, since you asked, here is the cheapest possible GTX 670 SLI build. OK, if it's not the cheapest possible, it is damn close.

Celeron G530 $50
EVGA P67 SLI $100 AR
DDR3 1333 2GB $13
GTX 670 SLI $800
Seagate 250GB $65
XFX Core 650 $80 AR
Gigabyte case $20
Total: $1128

Now that we've gotten that nonsense out of the way, do you mind coming up with some reasonable requirements? A real budget would be the first order of business. As I've demonstrated, saying "as small as possible" is worse than useless.

Maybe without max everything on max, but with "extra" settings on max, it is just not possible.

lol Celeron. Go with any case that you like, an i5 3570k, a mobo that works with your CPU, a good rated PSU, an SSD, and get a single 670 until you need another one.

OP is on a FAIL QUEST.

Okay guys, that's enough. This is a user help forum, so either constructively help the OP or just avoid posting altogether.

OP I agree with the other posters, in fact I don't just agree I firmly believe it to be the truth. Buy a rig with an unlocked I5 and a single 670 now and bank the money you were going to spend on the second one. In a couple of years (or at whatever point you feel that card isn't enough) spend the money you saved on newer tech e.g GTX 770.

SLI really only makes sense in 2 scenarios, you have a cheap card and want to get maximum performance for minimum outlay by adding an second identical card or you plan on running a high resolution/multiple screens. Neither of these apply to you.
