My Win8 key isn't working on Win8.1. I have 8.1 already installed, and it's not worth my time to re-install, so...

Where's the cheapest place to get a Win8.1 (non Pro)key?

Thanks for the help.

You still need to install 8.1, so, what is the difference between loading back win 8, and then, installing 8.1?

I suppose the cheapest would be a OEM key, or you could wait for win 10.

he won't need to install win 8.1 again - he can just enter the new key

however, looks like this trick might do ... unless OP has already done it and it does not work

The Windows 8.1 installer from the ISO does not accept Windows 8 keys. You need to install the system with a generic key (334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT for Core, XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB for Professional) and then enter your Windows 8 key after installing.

newegg.com sometimes has win 8.1 for sale. I have seen it as low as $70. It is $100 ATM.

Thanks for the reply, but I tried that, no workie. I already have 8.1 installed, and it's not worth the time and effort to install 8, then 8.1. I already have all my apps/settings put in. And I am too busy to do it again.

MS prolly thinks my Win8 key is in use, which is why it's spitting it out.

I have NO IDEA why MS went to different key versioning between 8 and 8.1. :hmm:

Why don't you just use a program to extract the 8.1 key from your current install and use that to activate a fresh install of 8.1?
