I don't want to walk into Best Buy and purchase this if I don't have to. I know that academic institutions would be one option, but what about other retail possibilities?

What's the cheapest I can expect to pay for a legitimate copy?

i am in the same situation. So far for an oem copy of windows xp home from a retail store you are gonna pay about $100. Right now I am trying to see what the price is for an ae edition through my g/f's school or if i can get a real copy off the fs/ft forums.

On any college campus. Academic versions are like $20 max. Usually around $10 but you need a student ID.

it's not ANY college campus, it's the one's that actually have an agreement deal w/ microsoft. For instance, it's available to faculty and staff here free to download ($10 if you want the cd), but not to students at all. MS Office Professional 2003 was just recently made available to students at a low rate here as well.
