I thought only 20" and above would do 1600x1200, but I could be wrong.

What do you consider cheap?

The Dell 2001FP comes down to $750 once in a while. It is $850 now.

I was referring to desktop LCD's. Several major notebook vendors offer UXGA resolutions on 15" screens. :)

I'd also like to know. The Dell 2001FP is the cheapest that I've seen when it goes on sale for $750, but other than that I don't think there is much satisfaction. Viewsonic has 20" LCDs but they're all over $1k.

A little OT but can anyone explain why notebook LCD's can get such high resolutions whereas desktop monitors are very limited?

Marketing. They don't see a big demand for the UXGA resolutions in the sub 20" class.

I would LOVE a 1600x1200 19" LCD with a 16ms response! :)

with notebooks you're also sitting a bit closer to the screen than you would on a desktop

actually, a 58% dot pitch improvement (133dpi vs 84 dpi) provides much better readability , not worse. considering, as mentioned, you are sitting closer. The vaio displays I've seen approach the image sharpness of magazine paper ... (edited for numbers)
