Cheap is pretty relative, Howard. It might be better to list a value. :)

Do you need 5.1 preouts or 7.1 preouts or just preouts to amp up the main L/R?

I would by far say your best bet is going to be craigslist. Second would be Audiogon or the FS/FT on some forums. I have purchased a Harman Kardon AVR-235 w/ 7.1 preouts in perfect condition with full retail packaging for $100 on my local CL. Depending on how large of a city you are in, receivers pop up quite often

Looks like I might be picking up a Yamaha RX-V867.

I bought this receiver from Newegg two months ago. Love it!!! You can't go wrong with it at this price point. I got mine at ~$450 so anything at or below that is a no brainer.

Is networking something you need? If not, I'd get the RX-A700 for $360 from amazon. Pretty much all the same specs. The RX-V867 has a tiny bit more power (not enough to make any difference) and weighs like 1lb more. The RX-A700 lacks the networking of the 867 but everything else is the same (inputs, preouts, etc) and has a 3 year warranty instead of a 2 year.

I don't pay tax on Newegg purchases. ;)

Ah. I don't pay tax on products from either website :)

Either way, both products are great. I personally would go with the A700 (I have a 667) because the networking doesn't matter to me, but the 867 is a great choice.

Yamaha is a good product. I went from Rotel separates to my Yamaha RX-V1050 back in the 90's...it wasn't as good as the Rotel stuff on paper, but sounded fine. I then upgraded to a HTR-5890. It's HDMI is really limited, but I have no need yet for that. When I go Flat Panel, I will update my DVD player to BluRay and my Receiver to a more modern unit.
