now i'm looking for something at least halfway decent (i.e. big enough that it can lead to a decent transfer down the road). at least as big as this one.

any idears?

edit for those of you just tuning in this is for a foreign student, so they have to pay the out of state tuition. therein lies the problem. it's 10k a year up here in vermont.

any idears?

I suppose it would depend on your current level of education and what degree you would like to obtain IMO sonambulo :)

Wow, I wasn't going to say this, but the quote in your signature made me:

"Never go to a school where even the people on the website are ugly."

Good luck finding one, seriously... I've no idea though. Perhaps your state has some scholarships?

lighten up, bob. its not for me its for someone else.

i can easily afford it or get the aid (vermont is good about that stuff) but this individual happens to be of the foreign persuasion.

they are all about the same price, therefore the cheapest one is the closest one.

In that case sonambulo, have your "friend" send you a copy of his/her transcript, and see what the "local" CC Registrar says IMO :)

I'm sorry. 10K a year for community college? GA Tech is only something like $4K (tuition-wise)... is Georgia that behind on inflation?
Tell me that this includes room and board too...

I would say just go to the one closest to you. I've never heard of someone go out of state for community college.

Florida's public education system is VERY cheap.... VERY...

Check out Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, FL

It has a HUGE feeder program with the University of Florida, probably 30% if not more of SFCC students transfer to UF after their 2nd year, if not more. They send more students to UF than any other institution, and UF is an excellent school (hell, it has to be if i went there, j/k :)) Nationally ranked programs across the board and a real fun place to live, i loved the 4 years i spent there.

In State Tuition is ~ $1400/year
Out of State Tuition is ~ $5200/year

However, it only takes 1 year to establish residency in FL. So after the first year, if you show an intent to stay in FL (whatever the hell that means), you can qualify for instate tuition.

If he's coming from out of the country he might as well go to a real school, since the tuition for a CC will be just as much for out-of-state residents.

Sorry--it was a long day Sonambulo.

Any chance there's the option of any scholarships? (Either from the school or some other outside organization that wants to promote diversity, etc.) I know the Rotary Club has a lot of these for U.S. students going abroad (grad school only) -- perhaps they have something similar that he/she might use?

Good point about the residency thing, but -- especially as a foreign student, I'm not sure how that would work. Generally, they want you to intend to establish a permanant residence there -- something that might conflict with the terms of the visa. Also, some states don't count time towards residency if you're in school (Of course, all that varies from state to state).

There were two kids from Pennsylvania at my community college in NY.

BTW, my CC was around $4000 a year. Don't go there though. It's evil.

For Community Colleges:

Nassau Community College and Suffolk Community College are consistently in the Top 5 Best Community Colleges in the Nation. Both are located on LI in NY.

Nassau Commnity College credits transfer all over the place (I have a bunch of credits transferring to University of Maryland: College Park), while Suffolk less so.

For County Residents, the colleges are about $3,000 a year.
For Non-County Residents, the colleges are about $6,000 a year.
