i need of a camera... i need one for graphic arts / photography and i don't know where to start looking.. can be manual or automatic doesnt matter...any suggestions?

what would you guys recommend for under 300. under 200 and under 150. (and if possible under 100)

i dont mind used equipment.

For beginner I always recommend Canon's REBEL series. Check out the prices and features and determine which one you need/can afford.

Can you explain more? Are you looking to construct a portfolio? Is that a class? Do you want this just for a hobby or web site?

its for class and a hobby. i would hope to be able to use this camera in the future also. not just something to take pictures.

i guess i kind of / might be useing this camera to construct a portfolio.

right now i own a canon s200. (digital 2M)

Just looked over at photo.net to see what they recommend for 35mm non-digital.

Recommended

Edit: This is the most flexible long-term solution. Shop the same site for a decent Canon lens.

That's an excellent camera, a friend of mine has the previous model and it's been great for him.

Takes amazing pics for under $200.

SLR is "single-lens reflex" meaning that when you look through the viewfinder you are actually looking through the lens as opposed to cheap cameras and throwaways that have a little hole that goes from the back of the camera to the front so when you look through the viewfinder you're not really looking through the lens. If you want to do real photography, you need an SLR (there are other types, but I'm assuming you don't really care)

If you go for a Canon Rebel or pretty much any other low-end SLR you'll find that the lenses will be interchangeable. You can buy a zoom lens with the camera, but I'd recommend your first lens being a telephoto (can see wide angle or zoom in with one lens). Beginning photogs. find this helpful and the lens-switching necessary otherwise pretty tedious.

Macro lenses are extreme closeup lenses and, to be honest, you probably dont want one without learning how to use it. Just not worth the hassle.

Look Here www.keh.com

Just looking at Pentax cameras they have several bodies under $80 Used
Add a Sigma 35-70mm & 70-210mm Vivatar zoom for $33 and $ 59 and your well on your way to a sub $200 system.

In this price range don't limit your self to only to nikon and canon. If you take up photography later you might what to switch (or you might not).

Upon further review, KEH has manuel focus cameras from all the biggies, (nikon, canon, minolta, pentax, olympus) for less than $100. I am sure they have similar lenses to the pentax ones I listed above.

A note about the Keh grading system, anything that I had got graded as Bargin was in pretty nice condition.

Maybe a real bargin they have a canon T-50 for $45 (I think).
