Hi, I'm getting Cable I guess I'm tired of this University Network crap. Anyway, there is a list of compatible modems that the cable company gave me, can anyone tell me which one is the cheapest one? Thanks, here's the list:

I have heard lots of good things about 3Com, Motorola, and Toshiba cable modems myself. I own a 3Com 3cr29220 and it works awesome. No problems at all.

Mind you, cable modems don't have any moving parts in them, so if they work past 90 days, they are probably going to work for life as long as you take care of them.

I would stick with a brand name whatever you do though. 🙂

cheap and best should not be used in the same sentence 🙂

I have a Motorola WaveRunner, and have been very happy with it

OK well I just got a message from the cable company and they told me that they are going to be switching to a new system within the next few months (DOCSIS 1.1 I am guessing), so does anyone know out of one of these which one is both DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1 ready, for cheap? someone let me know please, thanks!

well I figure that I can find a good deal on a modem somewhere if someone has one they are trying to unload for like < $100, that definitely beats renting the modem from them for $15/month, it would pay for itself in like 6 months 🙂

Anyone know of a good DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1 compatible cable modem that is on my list? thanks

<< why not lease/rent the modem from them? that way you're not stuck with old technology. >>

And, if you live in a lightning-prone area like me 😀, your ISP has to send a replacement if it takes a strike.

Yeah yeah, I know, in-line lightning suppressor. The Comcast installers and techs pooh-poohed the idea of one...to the tune of four crispy modems, then FINALLY installed a filter. Dorks.

Actually I heard that there is no way to uncap cable, it's not a restriction on your hardware/software, but on the system itself controlled by the admins, you can't do anything about it. (sounds logical to me! 😀 )

Anyway, I think that I will just rent the modem I guess, they have a program going to where if I put some stupid bumper sticker on my car then I get the modem for free for the first 3 months and there's only a $9.95 setup charge.. I think I'm gonna do it! (but I gotta act fast, it ends on the 30th! 🙁 )

hehe... cox come over and took my lancity away.. replaced it with there new surfboard cable modems.. I ended up buying it.. was sick of there 15 monthly rental fees
