Cheap, workable gigabit nic?

hypeMarked, the Intel Pro/1000MT is a good cheap gigabit NIC. Newegg has them new for $35, and a couple of "refurbs" listed for $22/$23.

The TrendNet NIC is based on the RealTek gigabit chip. You might know RealTek as a vendor of 10/100 chips that have a challenging time moving 100Mb/s, and a lot of general performance impacting brain damage. Their gigabit chip is the same architecture with 1Gb/s support.

cmetz, thanks for remind me of the refurbished section Newegg has. I was eyeing the intel one, but for 35 X 2 + shipping is a bit on the too much side. But the refurbished one seems just right.

Thanks to both of you JackMDS and cmetz for helping out.

I have learned that with NIC's, you often get what you pay for. I always try to go for intel based NIC's, and fall back to 3Com. Usually, I'm doing 100 mb/s stuff, so the old standard Intel Pro 100 is great for that.

For gig, I've only ever used intel, with the exception of one ACENIC fiber card.
